The origins of Lubartów date back to the 16th century, when in 1543 Piotr Firlej, Lublin Voivod, founded the town under the charter bestowed by King Sigismund I.
Owned by Mikołaj Firlej, the town enjoyed the most spectacular development in size, trade, and crafts. Lubartów (or rather Lewartów, as it was then called) offered a haven for many religious denominations, and it became a centre of the Reformation movement. The local grammar school run by the Polish Brethen (a.k.a. Arians) was recognised all over the country for the quality education it offered.
The town reached its subsequent golden age in the 17th century under the administration of the Sanguszko Family who contributed significantly to the town development. In 1744 the town adopted the current name. During the Second World War Lubartów was an important centre of the Polish resistance movement against the Nazi. The post-war period saw further growth of the town.
